In 1987, Karel Appel was commissioned by the Paris Opera to create the ballet 'Can We Dance A Landscape?'. It was performed in 1989 for the Brooklyn Academy of Music on the occasion of the Next Wave festival, in collaboration with the Japanese dancer and choreographer Min Tanaka and the Vietnamese composer Dao.
