Beautiful etching of a "shrimp fisherman by the sea" by the Dutch painter, etcher and lithographer Jacob Henricus Maris (1837-1899). He was best known for his cityscapes and landscapes with high Dutch skies. He is considered a member of the Hague School. Maris was the eldest of three painting brothers, the others being Matthijs and Willem. All three were successful painters of the Hague School and also worked impressionistically. Jacob Maris is considered the most important and influential Dutch landscape painter of the last quarter of the nineteenth century. His work is characterized by a sensitive representation of light and atmosphere, especially in his landscapes and cityscapes. His paintings often show vast skies, water features and the Dutch polder landscape. Maris started his career in The Hague and took classes at the Antwerp Academy in Belgium. He shared a studio with his brother Matthijs and received commissions from Princess Marianne to copy portraits of her Orange ancestors. He later returned to The Hague and became a member of the artists' association Pulchri Studio. His work can be admired in various museums and collections worldwide.
