Aat Verhoog is active as a painter, sculptor, graphic artist and architect. He was born in Rijswijk and studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague (1952-1955). He was an important artist and received the Jacob Maris Prize for painting in 1957 and the Royal Subsidy for Painting in 1960. Human figures are central to his work, whereby the relationship between the characters sometimes remains mysterious. He also subtly refers to historical subjects, such as mythology. Despite the fact that his own life often serves as inspiration for his paintings, he never takes over the events literally. It is always invented, constructed, brought together. Verhoog mainly paints in a bright color palette in a style that fits within realism. His work was regularly shown at exhibitions, including in 1960 at the Paris Biennale and in 1965 at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.
