Anthonie Pieter Schotel (1890-1958), originally a painter from Dordrecht, limited himself to almost one motif: the water. In doing so, he not only continued the tradition of his illustrious namesakes, the sea painters JC Schotel (1787-1838) and PJ Schotel (1808-1865), but also of important Dutch and foreign painters who drew inspiration from Dordrecht in the nineteenth century. such as Jongkind, Turner, Whistler and Witsen. From his successive residences (Dordrecht, Volendam, Vlissingen, Rotterdam and Laren) he studied the water and the ships. He was fond of the sturdy botters on the Zuiderzee, which he saw entering and leaving Volendam harbor under an ever-changing sky. Due to the construction of the Afsluitdijk (1932), a large part of the mighty wooden fishing fleet disappeared and Schotel focused more on pleasure craft in Loosdrecht and Muiden. The war was a painful period in his life in all respects, which he survived with difficulty, also from an artistic point of view. Schotel had no complaints about success during his life. Critics praised him as ?the Mesdag of the Zuiderzee? and ?Aquarius? of the Gooi painters. The Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen has a fine collection of his work. This collection of dishes now forms a historical document of the Zuiderzee.Source:Denninger,APSchotel,The world of water.
