Tilly Moes was the pseudonym for Sofia (Fia) Theordora van Driel, born in 1899 in Dusseldorf as the daughter of Johannes Gerardus van Driel and Sophia Adriana van Lammeren. Until her marriage to the artist Nicolaas Bruijnesteijn she lived with her parents in The Hague, where she attended the drawing academy. In her premarital period (until 1927) she painted "antique" still lifes: complicated dark-looking works with lots of fruit and flowers under the pseudonym "Tilly Moes".
