Shunyam makes cheerful work that is reminiscent of comics, in which animals play a central role. It is very direct and playful work. The artist finds animals much more interesting than people, because they are pure, innocent and sincere. Painting has brought Shunyam to her own essence: all that colourful cheerfulness represents how she feels. Her artist name – she came across the word Shunyam in India – also indicates a positive attitude; it means a pure, empty being that is open to creative energy. Shunyam: “You shouldn’t stand in front of my paintings and think: why does one sheep have an eye and the other doesn’t, and why is the sky pink, and so on. You have to leave that critical part behind you and experience the paintings as they are.” Shunyam is also an author of children’s books and does a lot of work for charities.
