In 1957, the eminent publisher Joseph Foret commissioned Dali to produce impressive lithographs and create an extraordinary composition of illustrations from Miguel Cervantes' famous book "Don Quixote." Dali used an unusual technique, which gained popularity after the book was published. Instead of using a brush or paint, Dali used an air gun that fired balls of ink. The paint spreads in a burst on the lithographic stone, thus giving Dali the basis of his inspiration. A completely empirical technique very symbolic of Dalinian genius, which goes even further: for his version of “Don Quixote”, he did not hesitate to dip snails in color, leaving unique traces. Therefore, the works were created spontaneously, a kind of artistic serendipity.
