Prosper de Wit, or simply Pros, was a Belgian painter born in Antwerp in 1860 and died in Schaarbeek in 1947 (Prosper Joseph Pierre de Wit). He studied at the Academy in Antwerp under the direction of H. De Braekeleer. He had a preference for interiors, landscapes and cityscapes. He attributed an important role to colour and light shades and painted poetic, atmospheric canvases. His work from the 1880s is characterised by a rather pasty paint treatment combined with the use of deep, saturated colours. These colours have just as little to do with reality as those of the first Fauvists. Was co-founder of the Circle “Als ik Kan” in Antwerp in 1883. Work in the Museums in Antwerp, Liège.
