Pépé Grégoire was born into a family of artists; his father Paul was a sculptor and his grandfather Jan was a painter. He studied at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam (1968-1974), where he was taught by, among others, his father Paul, Piet Esser. Pépé Grégoire won the Buys van Hulten Prize for his work in 1974 and the Jan Hamdorff in 1985. He makes large works for public spaces (2 to 8 metres high). He also made a number of commissioned portraits, including those of Queen Beatrix (1982) and August Willemsen (1995). He also designed the VSCD Colombina Prize, a bronze statuette from the Association of Theatre and Concert Hall Directors (VSCD) for the best female supporting role of the Dutch theatre season.
