The medal has on the front an image of the Dutch virgin, with sword and palm branch, who tramples barbed wire and the word freedom. The reverse shows the Dutch lion tearing up a swastika. The medal has a beautiful patina and is in a stand.
The medal was struck at the end of April 1946 at the Rijksmunt in Utrecht to commemorate the Liberation of a year earlier. According to a newspaper report from that time, the obverse does not read so much the Dutch virgin, but rather “…a figure of liberty with a liberty hat, making his way with sword and peace palm branch out of a barbed wire barrier”. The medalist of the liberation medal is LO Wenckebach (Heerlen 1895 - Noordwijkerhout 1962).

When it appeared, the medal was presented to resistance fighter Jan van Pelt in Scheidam. The medal is included in the collection of the war museum '40-'45 NU, Coolhaven 375, 3015 GC Rotterdam.
When shipped, the medal will be carefully packaged and shipped by PostNL.
