Ortho Owen was a Canadian artist who moved to Amsterdam out of love and for his art. He spent the last 16 years of his life there and created many works of art. His sports paintings and prints were a means to earn money so that he could finance his artistic life. That doesn't make his paintings any less attractive! He relied on his knowledge of sports for his accurate and exciting portraits of athletes in action. He was an avid sportsman himself; he played lacrosse, football, ice hockey and golf. Using gouache and pencil he captured the movement, tension and color that are so necessary in the painting of a sports figure.
Due to the growing interest in his work, he had prints made of the original paintings: in limited editions, signed and numbered to maintain exclusivity.
His work has been exhibited in art galleries, sports halls, stadiums and even discos in the Netherlands, Germany and Canada and at several major sporting events in the Netherlands. Sadly, he died at the age of 41, 10 years after he was diagnosed with a brain tumor.
