Julius Theodor Unger - Farm on the Water - Sold

This beautiful painting, entitled “Farm on the Water,” is a masterpiece by Julius Theodor Unger. Julius Theodor Unger was born in Amsterdam on November 30, 1890 and died there on May 20, 1968. He was married to Maria Susanna Margaretha Grotjahn (1893-1980) and was the son of Julius Theodor Unger and Louisa Maria Johanna Everhard. Unger started his career as a bookbinder and worked for some time at the Rijksmuseum print room. He later became an electrician until he became unemployed during the Depression. He then fully devoted himself to painting, which he had previously done as an amateur. He had been taught by a well-known painter, whose name unfortunately remains unknown. Much of his work was sold through an art dealer on the corner of Spui and NZ-Voorburgwal, also to the American market.
Unger's style can be described as realistic with a strong emphasis on naturalistic elements. His paintings are often recognizable for their accurate depiction of nature and rural life, with a subtle but effective use of light and shadow to create depth and realism. His work fits within the broader context of late 19th and early 20th century European landscape painting, which was a response to rapid industrialization and expressed a desire for the preservation of rural life.
