Johannis Hartungs (Berlin 1942) origins as a graphic designer and his experience in product design are very evident in his work. Starting from the plane, he evolves his illusion of plasticity translating grids of lines into a body-forming structure of dots. In his pictorial objects he quite deliberately goes beyond the actual surface, stressed by chrome-plated metal frames, achieving an illusion of between two- or three-dimensionality. This is his artistic trade mark. To Hartung, flamenco is a kind of elementary rhythmic force and individually experienced catharsis. With this in mind he has gone on developing his flamenco graphics and flamenco objects (the guitar in this work) created in the Andalusian colors, his “display art”, as he calls it. The dotted patterns of the close-fitting garments of flamenco dancers triggered a series of “body objects” on which he has been working since 1976.
