  • Johannes Hendricus Jurres was a Dutch romantic painter. During his career, Jurres lived and worked in Amsterdam and traveled to Italy, Switzerland and Spain, where he stayed and worked for some time. He received his first education at the National School of Applied Arts in Amsterdam and then at the National Academy there. His entire oeuvre included oil paintings, watercolours, drawings, etchings and lithographs. In 1921 he was appointed professor at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. He was a member of Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam. His work is currently in the Dordrechts Museum, the Singer Museum in Laren (North Holland) and in the Rijksmuseum Van Bilderbeek-Lamaison in Dordrecht.
Characteristic of Jurres is that he sought refuge and refuge in the past, but he did so in a typical 19th century manner. At the beginning of the 20th century there was clearly a rising historical consciousness and Jurres enjoyed a certain appreciation. Later, Jurres was dismissed for a long time as uninteresting and old-fashioned. Current historians are milder in their assessment. Partly thanks to a number of exhibitions at the end of the 20th century, Jurres has received a slight rehabilitation.
