Jean Rigazzi - Winter

Jean Rigazzi was a French-Belgian artist born in Besançon (France) in 1922 and died in Antwerp in 1993. He was a painter, sculptor, ceramist, designer of assemblages, stained glass windows and tapestries. He studied law for a while at the University of Lyon and was self-taught in the visual arts. He ended up in Antwerp after the Second World War. His work is both expressionistic and symbolic and lyrical abstract. Color and matter play a major role in the composition of his works. He found his inspiration in the landscape, the Scheldt, the sea and women, among other things. His works sometimes seem to be permeated by a bright and mystical light. From the press: “Anyone who comes into contact with the work of this color-drunk painter will be surprised by the truly 'Flemish' way in which JR expresses the atmosphere of his beloved Scheldt landscape. In grand colour evocations, which tend towards the abstract because of the way they are synthesised, the artist sings the praises of the unparalleled landscape on the banks of the river.” He exhibited in Hof de Bist in 1975, among other places.
