The Dutch painter Johannes Josephus ('Jan') Hovener was born in Rotterdam on August 14, 1936 and died there on February 10, 2021. Jan trained at the Rotterdam Academy. In 1959 he won the Talens Prize. He initially started as a pottery painter with Delft blue at De Porceleyne Fles. He painted in an impressionist style, mainly harbor views, cityscapes, genre scenes, cat scenes and street scenes. He taught his half-brother Peter van Berkel.
