Biography:
Joseph Louis Hippolyte Bellangé (Paris, 17 January 1800 – ibid., 10 April 1866) was a French painter and printmaker. His art was influenced by the wars of the first Napoleon. At an early age he produced several military drawings in lithography. He then continued his systematic studies with Gros, and with the exception of a few portraits he devoted himself exclusively to battle pieces. In 1824 he received a second class medal for a historical picture and in 1834 the distinction of the Legion of Honour, of which he became an officer in 1861. He also won a prize at the Paris World Exhibition of 1855.
