About the artist: Daniël Herbert van der Poll was born in Amsterdam in 1877. He studied at the Rijksakademie where he was taught by August Allebé. Van der Poll spent a lot of time at the zoo where he made studies of lions, tigers and other animals. In addition to drawing and painting, he was interested in astronomy. He died in 1963 at the age of 86 in his birthplace Amsterdam.
