The artist Hendrik Smit is an artist in the long line of artists who, besides working with a variety of colours, also accentuated the typical Dutch light. After a long period of experimenting in various directions, he finally found his own way. His work, rooted in a Dutch tradition of intuitive and expressive painting: mainly abstract. He says: “I mainly paint abstract and do not want any figurative element in my work”. He paints close to the canvas with his fingers, which creates a powerful expression that makes the colours splash out on the canvas, or wherever he is working. Despite the abstraction, there is much to see and more importantly, it never gets boring. In the meantime, Smit's work has grown into a stable collection, which can count on international recognition from American galleries, among others. Partly due to the professionalism that has always characterized Smit's approach, he has been able to attract a growing number of collectors who collect his work and there is currently talk of a surprising international breakthrough. This comes at a time when Smit has managed to develop a maturity in his style, among other things by increasingly uncompromisingly attacking his often large canvases. This, incidentally, in combination with oil paint. No longer using traditional brushes, but locally finishing the work with a palette knife, which can sometimes take a few days. But especially through direct physical contact with his hands wrapped in plastic on the canvas. In this way he literally has in his hands what he wants to apply to the canvas, without frustration from any medium. Add to that the power of both his large stature and his compelling spirit in art and a bundled energy with a reassuring smile on canvas is created. A portrait of the maker, as befits a good artist.
