“My life is painting and I live by painting”
In 1948 Helen White came to the Netherlands from her native New York. After a short period of teaching at the Arts Students League and the Pratt Institute she decided to study sculpture in Amsterdam. Under the guidance of the sculptor Cephas Stauthamer she successfully prepared for the entrance exam of the Rijksakademie, where she was taught by Piet Esser.
In Amsterdam she soon met her future husband, the painter Fred Sieger. After his appointment at the art academy in Arnhem, they moved together to the east of the Netherlands in the mid-1950s. In 1965 the couple settled in Zevenaar. In the meantime Helen Sieger had exchanged clay for paint, because – as she herself put it – she needed colour. While Fred Sieger worked almost exclusively in oil paint, Helen Sieger opted for gouache paint. She quickly developed into a specialist in this medium. Her first works show simplified landscapes and cityscapes. Later the figures came in cheerful colours, painted in a loose brushstroke and a direct, somewhat naive style. Her source of inspiration was the work of artists such as Paul Klee and Picasso, who influenced her not so much in a formal sense as with their uninhibited approach to the visual arts.
Over the years, Helen Sieger developed a completely unique artistic face, in which female figures play the leading role, but in addition much attention is paid to the autonomous expressiveness of colour and handwriting. In addition to many museums and galleries in the Netherlands, she exhibited her work in Sweden, Belgium, Denmark and Germany.
* Helen Sieger's work can be found in the Museum Arnhem, the Museum Henriette Polak in Zutphen and many private collections at home and abroad.
