The poster was designed in July 1967 by Hapshash and the Coloured Coat (Nigel Waymouth and Michael English) for a gig by The Pink Floyd at the UFO Club in London on 28th July 1967. The name of the club, 'UFO', was an abbreviation for 'Underground Freak Out' or 'Unidentified Flying Object', depending on your preference.
The poster shows a naked, winged woman pulling an island through space. This represents a kind of UFO or fantasy island, from which various flying machines emerge (airplanes, flying saucers, airships, shooting stars). On the rocky island is a city, with banners above it reading: " Night of the UFOs ."
The poster's design was influenced by the statement of the famous American architect, poet and visionary Richard Buckminster Fuller (1895-1983): 'We must regard our planet Earth as a spaceship'.
A biplane flying under the island leaves a vapor trail with the text: "July 28 Pink Floyd."
The title of the poster, " CIA v. UFO ", is a reference to the conflict between the repressive forces of the establishment and the new underground counterculture.
This poster is a screen print using metallic ink, which was rarely used for this type of poster. They were printed in very small editions and the posters were torn off and stolen as quickly as they were pasted up!
