Guus followed an artistic education at the Academy of Visual Arts in Rotterdam. He was a graphic student of Wally Elenbaas (our house / "Het Venster') and was also a student / and guest of the artist couple Bob Gesinus Visser in Menton. Later in life he became the teacher of Heleen Dekker, Cor Gardien and Montebasso.

De Ruiter was a member of De Venstergroep, of the Association of Practitioners of Monumental Arts (VBMK), of Arti et Amicitae in Amsterdam and of Pulchri Studio in The Hague.
