The poem 'Wherein the train rushes towards a new year, or: Scripta Manent but not always' was written especially for this edition. It appeared in this form for the first time. Gerrit Jan Komrij (1944 –2012) was a Dutch poet and connoisseur of Dutch poetry, writer, feuilletonist, translator, critic, polemicist and playwright. In 1993 he was awarded the PC Hooft Prize for his reflective prose. He was the Poet of the Fatherland from 2000 to 2004. Komrij was known for his virtuoso and colourful use of language and was a feared polemicist. After finishing grammar school in Winterswijk, Komrij moved to Amsterdam in 1963. He dropped out of his Dutch studies after six months. From 1967 onwards he worked as a translator. In 1968 his debut as a poet was published, after which a stream of translations, essays, reviews and poems saw the light of day. In 1984 Komrij emigrated to Portugal with his friend Charles Hofman.
