Frans de
Groen komt niet voor in de bekende overzichten van Nederlandse beeldende
kunstenaars. Toch zijn veel etsen van zijn hand bekend, met name van
stadsgezichten van vooroorlogs Rotterdam en Schiedam in de eerste helft van de 20e eeuw.
Frans de Groen werkte in een romantisch
realistische stijl. Zijn annotaties zijn niet altijd geheel correct; er zijn
etsen van hem bekend met verschillende annotaties, zelfs verschillende locaties.
Vrijwel alle van hem bekende etsen zijn in potlood gesigneerd en geannoteerd.
Sommige etsen ook met monogram of signatuur in de druk
Het afgebeelde werk is een ets uit de collectie van "Rijnmond Toen" onder nr. 184-FG. De ets geeft het oude stadhuis van Rotterdam weer in het vooroorlogse Rotterdam. Dit deel van het centrum van Rotterdam is tijdens het bombardement in 1940 vrijwel volledig verloren gegaan.
