This statue, in the form of a knight on horseback (as protector of financial stability), is below on the rectangular plinth with name and dates (visible, but covered in photo), and was awarded in 1970. Original design of the large statue at De Nederlandsche Bank probably early 1970s. Claus studied at the Graphic School (1949-1952), the National Institute for the Training of Drawing Teachers (1952-1954) and the National Academy of Visual Arts (1955-1960), all in Amsterdam. From 1979 to 1990 he was a professor at the National Academy. Claus is a representative of contemporary classical sculpture. Since the early 1960s, his work has been installed in public spaces in many places in the Netherlands. A recurring motif is the figures from the commedia dell'arte, such as the Lute Player (1981) in Hoogezand. He also made, among other things, the memorial for Willem Drees (1988) in The Hague and the sculpture Thinking, looking and doing for the head office of the Rabobank (1990) in Utrecht. Claus is also a medallist, he has designed various coins and medals. An example of this is the 10 guilder coin with Jan Steen (1997). Since 2005, the Colombina, the VSCD award for the best female supporting role of the Dutch theatre season, has been designed by him. During the 2017 ribbon ceremony, he was appointed Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion.
