Dick Osinga, Dirk Douwe Osinga (1913 – 1997) in full, was born in Leeuwarden. His father was a friend of Piet van der Hem, who advised him to go to the Rijksacademie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. Later he also studied at the National Higher Institute for Fine Arts in Antwerp (Belgium). Before and after WWII Dick made long journeys in France.
