Albert Carel Willink is one of the most important representatives of magical realism in the Netherlands. Willink uses a careful, realistic painting method to transpose reality into a fantastic make-believe world. The imagery of this 'magical' or rather 'fantastic realist', as Willink prefers to call himself, is related to that of surrealism. During a trip to Italy in 1962, the artist was struck by the Renaissance sculptures in the park of the Bomarzo Castle near Orvieto. The images inspired him to create five large paintings, including The Balance of Forces. 'I couldn't resist,' says Willink about this painting, 'to paint something made of iron: the launcher of a spacecraft. There is strength in ironwork. And then the powerless world of images; it proves the transience of everything around us...' (source MSK Gent).
