Beautiful watercolor by Albert Zwartjes from 1956. Albert Zwartjes was born in Utrecht on June 13, 1902. After his school years, he started figure drawing with Chris Achterberg and taking painting lessons with Arend van der Pol in Utrecht. Once in Laren, he founded the drawing club "Hamdorff" and worked for the establishment of the Gooische Academy for Visual Arts. He understood that drawing is a foundation for building a painting and necessary to find your own way, your own style.
Not content with an imitation of nature, he used the subject more as an opportunity to paint, omitting what he pleased, simplifying and thus arriving at a beauty full of his own vision. He was most attracted to the cityscape and has a preference for watercolor. His field of work included Europe. Although his style changed slowly, he continued to maintain a connection with tradition, expressive on the basis of late impressionist painting.
Zwartjens was a member of the Gooische Schildersvereeniging in Laren (NH) and "St. Lucas" in Amsterdam. His work was regularly encountered at the exhibitions in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and in the art gallery "Hamdorff" in Laren (NH). ) Four works were purchased for the Singer Museum in Laren.
