Aad (Arie) van Houwelingen (Zoeterwoude, October 19, 1934 - Leiden, March 18, 2018) was a Dutch visual artist, draftsman, graphic artist, painter and collagist. For his drawings he mainly worked with rice paper, Japanese paper and self-made ink.
Etching was his second most used method. He was known for incorporating his (self-made) diaries into his art. In recent years he had focused mainly on sculptures, small drawings and writing.
Life and work
Van Houwelingen was educated at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, together with his sister Gerti van Houwelingen. At that time he lived in Voorschoten, where his parents ran a haberdashery in the Schoolstraat. Eventually he moved to Leiden, where he led a somewhat secluded life. He lived and worked in a house called De Smidse on the Langebrug. His studio was located on the top floor of the Leidsche Zeevaartschool on the Noordeinde.
He documented his activities in small booklets, which he bound in rice paper and always carried with him. These more than fifty booklets, filled with texts and drawings, served as the basis for his oeuvre. For many of his silkscreen prints he used series of photos of pages from the booklets, sometimes combined with pages filled with writing, etched images or photos of objects from his surroundings.
