This category focuses on different types of furniture such as tables, chairs and cabinets, but also lighting, fixtures and other (functional) interior-related objects. The design of furniture is influenced by trends and necessity. The furniture industry can be divided into two categories: the 'luxury' furniture industry and the mass furniture industry. The 'luxury' furniture industry originated from the guilds and workshops. Furniture is sold in this industry for high prices. On the other hand, the furniture is made by specialized furniture makers and designers. The furniture is also of good quality design and execution.

The mass furniture industry has existed since the end of the nineteenth century. In it, furniture was offered to the middle class through an intermediary. This industry was hit hard in the First and Second World Wars as the customer base declined. This industry grew again in the 1950s.

Automation took place from the beginning of the twentieth century. New techniques led to new production methods. Machines were used, but because a lot of manual work was still required, it did not become assembly line work. New materials were used such as plywood, bentwood, plastics, bent and drawn metal or, as a warmer alternative, rattan and cane. Today, furniture can be made from almost any material imaginable.
