Henri_tte Ronner-Knip (Amsterdam, May 31, 1821 - Ixelles, February 28, 1909) was a Dutch-Belgian painter specialized in romantic animal paintings. She is best known for her paintings of cats. In 1850, shortly after their marriage, Henri_tte Knip and her husband Feico Ronner moved to Brussels, Regentschapstraat 7 in Sint-Joost-ten-Node, the first of a series of Brussels addresses. Feico took care of the business and arranged the money matters and the correspondence. Henri_tte Ronner's move to Brussels roughly coincided with a clear narrowing of her choice of subject: from then on she mainly focused on scenes with dog carts, dogs and later salon cats. Examples are. 'The Death of a Friend', a large canvas measuring 180 by 250 cm with the sentimental representation of a dead draft dog (Brussels, Salon 1860); ?Man and his friends? and ?Hunting dogs? (Antwerp, Salon 1861). Despite his weak eyesight, Knip's father took care of the artistic education of his daughter and that of her brother August himself, with iron discipline, from the age of five. In 1833 the Knip family moved to Beek (Nijmegen) after a short stay in The Hague. A few years later the family returned to ?s-Hertogenbosch and finally to Berlicum (near ?s-Hertogenbosch) around 1840. Gradually, Knip took care of the finances and the household. She probably continued to live in Berlicum until after her mother's death in 1848; then she moved to Amsterdam. In Beek, ?s-Hertogenbosch and Berlicum, Knip mainly worked after nature: cattle, pets, hooves, fields, forests, etc., first in pencil and watercolor and gradually also in oil paint. Her first serious piece was created in 1835 and was executed in collaboration with her brother August: ?The farm of the Prince of Orange near Tilburg?. Her famous scenes with long-haired cats in bourgeois salons were usually only created after 1870. It is mainly these scenes with their phenomenal texture rendering and their anecdotal character, which gave Henri_tte Ronner her lasting fame. those catsc
