Roberto MATTA (Santiago 1911 - Civitavecchia 2002)
Painter, Sculptor, Graphic Artist,
Roberto Matta created a world all his own, populated by demons and fantastical figures. He was strongly inspired by the problems of his time.
In 1939 Roberto Matta emigrated to the US, where he became acquainted with the older generation of Surrealists and Dadaists such as Breton, Ernst, Léger, Mondriaan, Miró and Tanguy. He became particularly fascinated by Marcel Duchamp, whose mechanistic painting style from around 1912 he used. He also gets to know abstract expressionist painters such as Motherwell and Pollock.
After the war, Matta was expelled from the Surrealist group only to be reinstated fifteen years later because of his great contributions to the movement. In 1949 he returned to Europe and stayed in Italy, England and France. In the fifties and sixties he increasingly took a stand in the political developments of the modern era. At the same time, his style became harder and more realistic.
Matta's work can be found in all major museums in the world. In 2000 the museum showed a large retrospective of his work in his native city of Santiago. Roberto Matta Echaurren died in November 2002 at the age of 91 in a hospital in Civitavecchia near Rome. Three days of national mourning were immediately declared in Chile.
Matta studied architecture at the Universidad Catolica in Santiago. In 1933 Matta traveled to Paris, where he worked for two years as a draftsman in the Parisian studio of the famous architect Le Corbusier.
