Richard LONG (Bristol 1945)
English sculptor, painter and photographer, who is best known for his land art and conceptual art.
Life and work Long was born in 1945 in Bristol where he still lives. He began his studies in 1962, also in this city, at the West England College of Art. After completing this study, he started studying at St. Martin's School of Art (now known as Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design) in London in 1966. In the same year that he completed his studies, he had his first solo exhibition with Konrad Fischer.
Richard Long photographs and manipulates the landscape around him. Most of the works were created during walks through nature. An example is A Line Made by Walking (1967) where he "draws" a long line on the floor by walking back and forth several times. The pictures he takes are usually the only remnant of his actions. Although most of this Land art can be found in Great Britain, he has also created works in the Sahara, Spain and the United States, among others.
In addition to land art, Long also made sculptures for museums. These consist of pieces of stone or wood laid out in a circle or other geometric figure. He also makes "paintings" with mud on the wall or on the floor.
In the Netherlands, works by Richard Long can be found in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, in Museum De Pont in Tilburg and in the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven. In Belgium, Long's work is in the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium.
