Peter Alma
Graphic artist, designer, painter
Born in Medan (Indonesia) in 1886, died in Amsterdam in 1969
Education: Peter Alma studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague. Also Acad_mie Humbert in Paris. Here he became friends with well-known artists, such as Piet Mondriaan and Diego Rivera. Lived and worked in The Hague, Amsterdam, Laren and Paris.
Peter Alma is a communist artist, this is reflected in his style and his choice of subjects. He believed that an artist should serve humanity. In the 1920s he mainly made works in the style of figurative constructivism, an avant-garde painting style from Russia. This style is characterized by the use of many geometric shapes and a limited color palette. Constructivists often represent technology and/or the industrial world with their art. Later Peter Alma mainly made monumental work, a well-known example of a work in this style can be seen as a wall painting in the Amstel station in Amsterdam.
At a certain period in his life, Peter Alma often chose socialist and communist political subjects, such as a factory worker. From the end of the 1930s, Alma more often chose neutral scenes such as landscapes, still lifes, street scenes
