Melle OLDEBOERRIGTER (Amsterdam 1908 - Amsterdam 1976)
Graphic artist, painter, typographer.
Education: Melle was educated from 1922 at the Amsterdam Graphic School, where he learned the trade of typesetter. In the evenings he took courses in drawing and lithography. As a painter he is self-taught. He lived and worked in Amsterdam.
In 1930 Melle started as a typesetter at De Arbeiderspers. He later became editor for the newspaper Het Volk. Melle has also started painting since 1936. After the war he devoted himself completely to art, seeing himself as a ?visionary painter.? In the 1960s he became known for his very surrealistic images and still lifes of animals, figures, landscapes. Eroticism plays an important role in his work. Melle was so successful that buyers were put on waiting lists and he refused to sell work to renowned art collector Peggy Guggenheim. Melle from 1953 to 1968 teacher of typesetting and from 1968 to 1973 teacher of painting and free graphics at the Institute for Applied Arts Education in Amsterdam (from 1968 the Gerrit Rietveld Academy).
Exhibitions and prizes:
Melle's work was part of a number of exhibitions in, among others, the Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum Twenthe. In 1972 a first retrospective of his work took place in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. His work has also often been exhibited after his death, six of which were solo exhibitions. In 2008/2009, the Museum of Modern Art Arnhem hosted the largest retrospective of his work, on the occasion of Melle's centenary.
