Mel RAMOS (Sacramento 1935 - Oakland 2018) is a well-known pop art artist.
His work has often been seen alongside work by pop art artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg and James Rosenquist in the United States and Europe. The work was widely distributed in books and magazines.
In his work Ramos combines realistic depiction of people (mostly women) and consumer products against abstract backgrounds. Since 1959, he has participated in more than one hundred and twenty group exhibitions.
Mel Ramos began painting comic book heroes such as Batman in 1961. From 1963 he mainly focused on portraying Wonder woman and other female superheroes, Pin ups, in an environment of Western consumer items such as a coca-cola bottle, luxury cars. It is not clear whether he thereby denounces the exploitation of female beauty in advertising or whether he idealizes it himself. Ironically, since 1972, he has also been parsing well-known masterpieces from art history (Unfinished Paintings), replacing the classical nudes with contemporary pinups.
