Joop MOESMAN (Utrecht 1909 - Houten 1988)
Surrealist painter, type designer, polemicist, amateur photographer and railway worker.
Education:
Moesman grew up in a family where his father worked as a lithographer and photographer. It is therefore not surprising that Moesman was interested in the creative profession, but in his daily life he became a railway worker.
Moesman found a French magazine in the shop of the surrealist Willem Wagenaar in which he saw photos of various surrealist painters. He was so inspired by these works that he started painting in a similar style on his own, in the process he reproduced the most important surrealist paintings in the Netherlands.
In the 1960s, Moesman's paintings received international recognition through the efforts of Her de Vries, who showed the reproductions to the foreman of the surrealists in Paris. As a result, Breton decided to exhibit Moesman's work at the International Surrealist Exhibition in Milan.
Moesman was also the founder of the Utrecht art society De Luis, together with Dirkje Kuik and Henc van Maarsseveen.
