Jean TINGUELY
Painter, Sculptor
Born in Friborg (Switzerland) in 1925, Died in Bern (Switzerland) in 1991.
Education: Jean Tinguely started his training at the decorator course at the Globus department store in Basel and continued at the Rheinbr_cke. Switzerland
Jean Tinguely belongs in modern art, with Pablo Picasso, Wladimir Tatlin, Marcel Duchamp and Edward Kienholz, among others. They have created an entirely new oeuvre outside all traditions and conventions, a complete creation that cannot be compared to anything. Tinguely's work turns, it slides, it swings, it throws, it strikes, and the next movement is never identical to the previous one. Jean Tinguely is best known for his kinetic works of art. He was part of the Nouveau R_alisme. The influence of the French Dada_sme is clearly felt in his work. The installations made by Jean Tinguely move in different ways. Sometimes an engine is used, sometimes the spectator is the driving force and sometimes natural forces such as the wind. Tinguely has also created sculptures, including some self-destructing machines, which were destined to change over time. Jean Tinguely was convinced that the essence of both life and art consists of continuous change, movement, and instability. He expressed this very clearly in his work. His useless machines can also be seen as caricatures and critiques of the mechanical world, the technological system, and the belief in technological progress.
Belongs to the following movements/groups: Kinetic Art
