Jan HOVING (Groningen 1938)
draftsman and painter.
Born in Groningen 1938.
Education:
Jan Hoving grew up in an artistic environment where much attention was paid to drawing and painting. Hoving is the son of painter Wietse Hoving (1911-1999). Hoving is a self-taught artist, until he was thirty-five he worked as a decorator and window dresser before devoting himself completely to artistry. As a self-taught artist, Jan Hoving has participated in the NU Group.
Hoving mainly painted figurative works, somewhat reminiscent of Picasso, this figuration completely faded into the background in the 1970s. In the eighties Hoving became acquainted with the work of the Muhlheimer Freiheit and he too started to work in a more figurative-expressive style. The strict serial style he used in the 1970s will then become a thing of the past. Jan Hoving considers himself more of a draftsman than a painter, he finds the solution in the use of so-called oilsticks: oil paint in the form of pencils where the drawing is nevertheless paramount.
Exhibitions and prizes:
Groninger Museum owns a large number of works on paper by Jan Hoving from the period 1970-1980.
