Henri MATISSE
Painter, sculptor, graphic artist.
Born in 1869 in Le Cateau-Cambr_sis, died in 1954 in Nice.
Education: From 1889 to 1890, Matisse took drawing lessons at the cole Municipale de Dessin M. Quentin de La Tour. In 1891 he entered the Parisian Acad_mie Julian, where he was taught by Wiliam Bougeareau. In 1892 Matisse also takes an evening course at the _cole des Arts D_coratifs. From 1895 to 1899 he attended the _cole des Beaux-Arts. Matisse has lived and worked in several French towns and villages. He traveled to, among others, Great Britain, Algeria, Italy , Germany, Spain, Russia, Morocco, the United States and Tahiti, where he gained inspiration and worked.
Matisse studied law because his father wanted him to, but from 1891 he devoted himself completely to art. At the beginning, Matisse's work, inspired by old masters, was quite traditional. Later, after a trip to Corsica, Matisse was impressed by the work of Van Gogh, C_zanne and Gaugin. In 1904 Matisse had his first solo exhibition at Amroise Vollard's gallery. Soon after, Matisse began to create more expressive colors. In 1905 the exhibition was in the Salon d'Automne, which Matisse and his style contemporaries nicknamed ?les fauves? (?wild beasts?) delivered. Since then, Matisse has been known as the father of Fauvism, a style in which bright contrasting colors are juxtaposed without transition and in which there is no room for a traditional use of perspective. Matisse quickly made fame; during this time he made many works that are now loved all over the world. In 1917 he moved to Nice, where he returned to working in a more traditional way. After an operation in 1941, Matisse could no longer work as before, and started making d_coupages, collages from cut-out pieces of painted paper (gouaches).
Exhibitions and prizes:
Matisse's work was featured in the first, second and third Documenta. From 1931 to 1933 there was already a traveling retrospective of his work. Furthermore, Matisse has had important solo exhibitions in Paris, New York and London, among others. His work is also often shown in combination with the work of other great modernists such as Picasso and Rodin. His work is included in a number of important museum collections and in Nice there is a museum entirely dedicated to Matisse.
