Carl Olof LARSSON (1853-1919)Carl Larsson (Stockholm, May 28, 1853 - Falun, January 22, 1919) was a Swedish artist who became especially known for his watercolors. He also worked with oil paint and made more than a hundred etchings and lithographs. He also made murals and, together with his second wife, was involved in interior design. Larsson grew up in a poor environment. When he was 13 years old, his teacher led him to enroll as a student at the Stockholm Academy of Art. He worked as a photographer to pay for his education. In 1872 he entered a modeling school, where he met his first wife Vilhelmina Holmgren. During the following years he illustrated a number of books to support his family. In 1877 his wife died in childbirth with their second child. The two children from this first marriage also died young. These events contributed to Carl Larsson's recurring depressions, which he also wrote about in his autobiography Jag ("I"). In 1877 he had enough money to go to Paris. He stayed there for a year. In the autumn of 1880 he returned to Paris, without much success there. During the summer of 1881, near Fontainebleau, he visited the artists' colony of Grez-sur-Loing, where he began to paint watercolors of the nature around him. Larsson then found his subjects in his immediate environment, such as his wife Karin Larsson-Berg__ and their newborn daughter.
