AR PENCK (Dresden 1939 - Zurich 2017)
Painter, draftsman, graffiti artist
AR Penck was trained as an apprentice draftsman at the DDR advertising agency DEWAG. He lived and worked in Dublin (Ireland), Berlin (Germany) and London (England) and New York (USA).
AR Penck gained worldwide fame with his paintings in the eighties. These are based on pictograms, graffiti and primitive representations of human figures and totem-like forms. AR Penck was frequently asked for important exhibitions in London and New York AR Penck is considered part of the 'De Nieuwe Wilden' group of artists, which also included artists such as George Baselitz, Rainer Fetting, Jorg Immendorff and Markus Lupertz.
AR Penck's sculpture is less well known, but has the same primitive themes as his paintings and drawings. For his work he often used everyday materials such as wood, bottles, cardboard boxes, cans, masking tape, aluminum foil, wire. The sculptures are rough assemblages, roughly painted. Paul Klee and Jackson Pollock inspired AR Penck's work.
