Anton PEACE (Willemstad 1953)
Painter, graphic artist
Education:
Anton Vrede was educated at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam.
Lives and works in Rotterdam
The birthplace of Anton Vrede is located in the tropics, on Curaçao. He was nine years old when he moved to the Netherlands. For him, painting is the perfect opportunity to reconcile these completely different cultures. His sources of inspiration do not force him to work in a tradition, he takes the liberty to shape his 'world of paint' in a personal way. Typical of Anton Vrede's work is the close relationship between humans and animals. If you take a look at the exotic tangle of tigers and cats, cockatoos and parrots, monkey and man, you will find yourself back in the Garden of Eden. However, this work is not sentimental, Vrede is aware that the tiger is used here to promote petrol and that the toucan acts as a bait for a chain of restaurants. Vrede's work is not only reminiscent of a magical existence, linked to nature, but also, for example, of the ingeniously constructed Disneyworld. Vrede sees his work as fairy tales for adults, as contemporary myths. Peace handles the brush with feline agility. He sees a painting as a territory where, in principle, anything is possible. With watery paint he creates a sultry atmosphere and vague figures arise naturally. Underneath, Peace touches upon an essential dilemma: what distinguishes us from the animals? Where does the relationship end? In his work Anton Vrede seems to be looking for a paradisiacal harmony, while at the same time recognizing the impossibility of this.
