Andy WARHOL (Pittsburgh 1928 - New York 1987)
Painter, graphic artist, photographer, cinematographer.
Education: Warhol studied Pictorial Design at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh from 1945 to 1949. Warhol mainly lived and worked in New York.
Warhol is one of the best known pop art artists; The central theme in his work is the daily visual culture of the American consumer society. He made flat, austere colorful compositions and large format serigraphs of images that represented American cultural values to him.
Warhol was born Andrew Warhola, son of two immigrants from Slovakia. After training in Pittsburgh, he moved to New York, where he worked as a commercial illustrator. In the 1960s, he began painting famous American products in the style for which he is so famous. Warhol created a media circus around himself and his art and was good friends with a number of celebrities, many of whom he also portrayed. In 1964 he established his studio in an old cap factory and called it 'The Factory': he himself was part of the commercial mass production that was the subject of his art. He also criticized society, with a series of works of, among other things, electric chairs and car accidents. His work later became increasingly conceptual, which ties in with the impersonality of Warhol's 'factory art'.
Exhibitions and prizes:
The first major retrospective of Warhol's work was in 1968. His work can be found in the most important modern art museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the TATE Modern in London and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. There is also a Warhol museum in Pittsburgh.
