In February 2010 the Eindhoven artist Ad Snijders passed away at the age of 80. He had a major exhibition in the Van Abbemuseum and received a royal award during the opening for his services to the (Eindhoven) art world. The enfant terrible that he once was as an artist grew over the years into a respected artist, one of the last of the generation of painters, such as Karel Appel or Ger Lataster. Tijdgeest Snijders was self-taught. That is, he had mastered drawing and painting without formal training at an art academy. He looked especially carefully around himself: at what inspired other artists and what they subsequently did with it. He tasted the zeitgeist, that of the resistance against the established art order. And he managed to give it his own twist, to develop his own identity as an artist. In the 1960s he played a major role in the art climate of his hometown Eindhoven.SAS He was part of the artists' movement SAS (?Shit on painting?), together with JCJ van der Heyden and Johan Lennarts, who to oppose the prevailing views of art. ?You wanted to conquer a place in the art world by kicking against the existing. When you say that Rembrandt is a great painter, nobody listens. But if you shout that Rembrandt is a big bastard, then suddenly everyone listens. So we were against everything?, he would say later.Vechter Ad Snijders' work was initially influenced by the artists of the _cole de Paris and Cobra. But once he had found his own way, he became an artist of the struggle with color and the questioning of matter; paint and canvas, chalk and paper?, as the then director Jan Debbaut of the Eindhoven Van Abbemuseum wrote in 1994 on the occasion of the Snijders exhibition. Snijders was indeed a fighter, who until his death wrestled with the empty surface in order to finally come to form.Alchemist In his eyes, a painting was never really finished, because there was always another work waiting to be made: better, more intense, harder. The colors he used had the same overwhelming clarity as those in some of Cobra's paintings, but the handwriting is typical Snijders. His goal, he once said, was to turn "shit into gold". Like an artful modern alchemist, who had traded his incantations for paint and brushes.
